Planning to travel internationally with a damaged Australian passport could ruin your travel plans. A passport with torn pages, watermarks, a cloudy photo or illegible name will cause delays, and may result in refusal of admittance into other countries. The best way to avoid a disruption in your vacation is to have satisfactory travel documents.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your current passport. Ensure the photograph and signature are perfectly clear and legible. If your passport has watermarks, torn pages, a faded photograph, or an unclear signature -- replace the damaged passport with a new one, by completing the appropriate application.

    • 2

Pick up the application from an Australian Post outlet, the Australian Passport Office, or online by visiting Passports.gov.au. Choose the appropriate application: Applications may differ for adults and children, as well as for in-country or overseas applicants.

    • 3

Complete the application. If using the pre-printed form, use black ink. You can also complete the application online.

    • 4

Sign your completed application. If you complete the application online, you cannot submit the document that way. You must print it and sign it in black ink.

    • 5

Review the list of required items. These are the documents you need to submit with your application.

Include two photographs taken in the last six months. They must be at least 35mm wide by 40mm high; but not more than 40mm wide by 50mm high. One photo must be signed by your guarantor.

You must also provide: proof of Australian citizenship, proof of identity and all current Australian travel documents. These must be in your name. Original documents are required. No photocopies will be accepted.

A complete list of stipulations is available at the passport office or online.

    • 6

Schedule an appointment for your personal interview. Submit your application at the time of your interview.

The application, documents, and interview must be completed by the person named on the passport. Applications for children must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian.

Call the APIS directly, if you need to travel urgently. You may meet the special requirements to lodge your application directly with a Passport Office.

Submit your application to the Australian Consulate, if you are overseas.

    • 7

Pay the passport fee at your personal interview, when you are lodging the application.

Fees vary and checks are not acceptable. For a complete list of fees, review the passport costs at the Post outlet, Passport Office, or visit the website.
