How to Tell When Your Passport Expires

Passports are issued by the U.S. Department of State and are generally valid for up to 10 years for an adult and five years for children under 16. It can be easy to forget when your passport expires, so before making plans to travel abroad, ensure that your passport will be current for your trip.

      Locate and open your passport to the page where you photo is and turn the passport book horizontally. This will allow you to read your passport information more easily.

      Look towards the bottom of the page next to your picture. You will see all of your personal information listed. Locate the information labeled "Date of expiration." You will see the passport expiration date listed below. The date will be listed with the date, the month, and the year for example 22 March 2011.

      Keep in mind that most countries require you have at least six months from the date of entry into the country before your passport expires. If your passport will expire while you are traveling, you will need to apply for a renewal before the trip. Standard renewal times take approximately four to six weeks while expedited service is two to three weeks so plan accordingly.
