How to Find Out if a Passport Is Valid

Passports are internationally recognized proof of citizenship of the United States. When traveling abroad you are required to have a valid passport issued by the U.S. Department of State. If you are currently a passport holder, there are ways to determine its validity before going through the time and expense of the renewal process.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the date of expiration on your current passport. The expiration date is on the information page, along with your name and passport photo. If the date of expiration has passed, your passport is not valid. If your expiration date is six months or less from the current date, you should renew your passport; many international countries do not allow travelers to enter if their passports expire less than six months from the arrival date.

    • 2

Check the name listed on your passport. If you were married, divorced or legally changed your name via court order and did not update your name on your passport, it is no longer valid.

    • 3

View each page of your passport. Carrying documents in your pocket, handbag or luggage creates normal wear and tear, which is accepted by customs agents. However, if your passport is damaged excessively -- torn, ripped, water damaged or missing pages -- it is not valid.
