Visit a US embassy and receive a limited passport, if you lose your passport while traveling in another country. This passport is not a long-term replacement for your actual passport and will only be valid, with limitations, for three months from the time of issuance.

Ask for help in an emergency. If you are scheduled to travel directly to the US and have lost your passport during a time that the embassies are closed, you can ask for help from a duty officer. It is rare, but sometimes you can convince them to write a transportation letter that will inform US Customs and Immigration that you will be attempting to enter the States.

Get deported and leave a country without a passport. Deportation proceedings vary from country to country, and chances are this method of exit will not be quick, comfortable, easy or cheap. If you are caught in a foreign country without a passport and you cannot prove that you can legally remain in that country, you will probably first be put in jail until the authorities have determined your country of origin. Once determined the consul of your country's embassy will arrange for your travel home, but will also inform you that you must pay fines, travel expenses and may lose your privilege to enter the country that deported you, possibly indefinitely.
