How to Change Your Passport Number

A passport is a small booklet, issued by a national government, which allows people to internationally travel. It contains your name, date of birth, sex, and place of birth. If your passports was issued more than 15 years ago or you've recently married and have changed your name, it's time to get a new passport. If you're reapplying for a passport in preparation of travel be sure to disregard any information from your previous passport as some important information changes when you're issued a new passport.

      Find your local passport agency and fill out and submit a DS-11 form. A DS-11 form is the passport application that requires pertinent information like residential history and social security identification.

      Be sure to bring evidence of U.S. citizenship, like a previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport or a certified birth certificate, because it must be submitted with Form DS-11. Also, an acceptable form of identification must be present at the time you apply. All of your documentation submitted will be returned to you via mail.

      Bring a photocopy of both the front and back of an identification you provide. Ask your local Acceptance Agent what are the size specifications for the photocopy. Typically, a photocopy must be on plain white, 8 1/2 x 11" standard paper stock, showing the front and the back of your ID.

      Check out http://travel.state.gov for current passport fees and methods of payment. Bring the allotted amount of cash along with you to apply.

      Provide two passport photos. Stores like Walgreen's and CVS offer passport photo services for affordable prices. Your passport photos must be identical, in color, 2 x 2 inches in size, printed on thin photo-quality paper, taken within the past 6 months that shows your current appearance, positioned full face with a plain white or off-white background, be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head and depict you in normal street attire.

      Passport processing times vary depending on the amount of passport applications that need to be processed. At the maximum, it will take six weeks for you to receive your passport with the changed number and new information. If you have immediate travel needs, you can get your passport expedited but it'll cost you more money. Contact the National Passport Information Center to upgrade your application to Expedite.
