Renew your passport by mail if your most recent passport is undamaged and can be submitted with the application, was issued within the last 15 years, was issued when you were 16 years or older, and is under either your current name or a new name that you can legally document. If you do not meet any of these requirements, see "Renewing in Person."
Fill out form DS-82 either online or by hand. You can also get the form from your local Acceptance Facility or a passport agency. See the link in Resources
Submit your completed form with your most recent U.S. passport; a check or money order for current passport fees, which are linked in Resources; and a marriage certificate or court order if your current name differs from the one in your passport. If needed, expedite your application with an additional fee.
Include two passport photos, which need to meet certain requirements. For the best results, have these taken at a professional passport photo shop or use one of the Acceptance Facilities that offers photos.
Visit a passport agency in person if you need your passport less in less than two weeks for international travel or within four weeks to obtain a foreign visa. Otherwise, you may not receive it in time because normal processing takes four weeks while expedited requests take two to three weeks.
Apply in person at a passport agency if you don't meet any of the requirements for renewal by mail.
Complete Form DS-11, which is available in the link under resources. Do not sign this form until the passport agent instructs you.
Submit evidence of U.S. citizenship, which includes a previously issued and undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, or naturalization certificate.
Present photo identification such as a valid driver's license, military ID or government ID. Include a copy of this ID on standard paper measuring 8.5 by 11 inches. Include two passport photos.
