How to Renew an Official Passport

A current passport is required in order to travel internationally. Every ten years, a passport needs to be renewed. The United States Department of State developed a travel site that provides the form needed to renew your passport. Entitled Form DS-82, the application can be completed online, printed out, and sent to the Department of State. Your passport will be renewed after sending Form DS-82, along with an application fee, passport photos, and your old passport.

      Visit the U.S. Department of State's official travel website. Within the website is access to the "DS-82" document required to renew your passport.

      Access the "DS-82" form needed to renew the passport. From the website's homepage, select the "Renew a Passport" link underneath the "Renew by Mail" section. On the new page, click the link entitled "Form DS-82: Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail."

      Choose one of the two available options to fill out Form DS-82. Select "FILL OUT FORM DS-82 ONLINE" to fill in the requested information online. Click "PRINT A BLANK FORM DS-82" To print out a blank copy of the DS-82 form.

      Fill in the requested information into the blank spaces. Completely enter information into Form DS-82. Input your full name, address, date of birth, social security number, and other critical information into the empty spaces. If you chose to fill out the form online, print the completed form using your printer.

      Sign and date the form using the space provided on page 1 of the application.

      Place Form DS-82 into a padded envelope. Mail the envelope to the address listed on page 1 of the form. Additionally, include two passport photos, current passport fees, and your most recent U.S. passport.
