How Do I Renew My Passport After I Got Married?

Once you get married and take your new spouse's surname, you need to update your passport. Attempting to travel internationally without first changing your name on your passport will result in customs' refusal to let you exit or enter the United States or any other country. For name changes, you only have to renew your passport if your original was issued more than one year ago. If your current passport was issued less than one year ago, you only have to fill out a form requesting a name change at no cost to you.

Instructions

  1. Renew Passport after Marriage

    • 1

Obtain form DS-82 from the U.S. Department of State website or any passport acceptance facility if your current passport is more than a year old. Passport acceptance facilities are typically post offices and other government offices authorized to process passport applications.

    • 2

Complete form DS-82 by answering all questions and filling out all required information on the form such as your name, address and Social Security Number.

    • 3

Mail form DS-82, your current passport, one passport photo of yourself -- which must meet the same guidelines as the photo you used when you applied for your original passport -- a certified copy of your marriage certificate and a check payable to the U.S. Department of Treasury in the amount of $110, which is the renewal fee as of 2011, to the Department of State. Your new passport will be mailed to you six to eight weeks after the Department of State receives your renewal information. The mailing address is:

      National Passport Processing Center

      Post Office Box 90155

      Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155

    • 4

Include an additional check for $60 to expedite the processing of your passport. Expedited passports are processed and mailed to you within two to three weeks of submitting your application. Mail your information for expedited service to:

      National Passport Processing Center

      Post Office Box 90955

      Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955

    Update Passport

    • 5

Obtain form DS-5504 from the Department of State website or any passport acceptance facility if your passport was issued less than one year prior. Passport holders with passports less than a year old are not required to pay for a renewal, only to send a request for a name change to the U.S. Department of State.

    • 6

Complete form DS-5504 in its entirety and obtain a certified copy of your marriage license.

    • 7

Mail your application, copy of your marriage license and one passport photo to:

      National Passport Processing Center

      Post Office Box 90107

      Philadelphia, PA 19190-0107

Your new passport will arrive six to eight weeks after you submit your application.

    • 8

Write a check for $60, payable to the Treasury Department and include it with your application and supporting documents to expedite your passport. Expediting your passport means it will arrive in two to three weeks rather than six to eight. For expedited service mail your application and documents to:

      National Passport Processing Center

      Post Office Box 90907

      Philadelphia, PA 19190-0907
