How to Obtain a Passport Overseas

If you've lost your passport overseas, you are not the first. Though it is not an enjoyable experience, it's also not uncommon--which means the nearest U.S. embassy knows exactly how to help you. It may seem like a nightmare going through all the paperwork of obtaining a new passport when you should be enjoying your vacation, but if you follow these steps, you should have a new passport within a day or two.

  Report your lost or stolen passport to the local police and the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy. Ask a policeman to direct you if you do not have the necessary addresses and phone numbers, or obtain this information online by visiting usembassy.gov.

  Contact the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy and ask for the American Citizens Services unit. Tell them your planned date of departure so they can assist you as efficiently as possible. Often, they can usher you through the process of obtaining a new passport in just 24 hours.

  Fill out a new passport application. Use a photocopy of your old passport identification page to prove your citizenship and identity.
