How to Obtain a Hungarian Passport

International travel for Hungarian citizens requires a passport issued by the Hungarian government. It identifies the nationality and citizenship of the carrier to foreign authorities. It also permits the owner legal re-entry into Hungry. A passport can be applied for at any Hungarian mission abroad that oversees consular affairs. As of June 29, 2009, all Hungarian passports contain biometric data on its owners.

      Complete a passport application form at the Embassy or Consulate of Hungary nearest you. Use the government section of your phonebook or an online database like Embassies Abroad to locate the facility in your jurisdiction.

      Present your valid Hungarian identity card or Certificate of Hungarian Citizenship issued less than one year ago. A Hungarian birth certificate does not constitute as a valid proof of nationality.

      Provide two identical passport photos measuring 35-by-45 cm, taken against a white background. They must show a frontal view of the face without any glasses or anything covering the head. You can ask the Consulate office issuing your passport if they offer a photo service, otherwise you will be responsible for supplying the photos by other professional means.

      Submit your passport materials at the Consulate office and provide your biometric data. The process will consist of 10-digit fingerprint scan and a digital photo taken on-site.

      Pay the passport fees in your local currency and provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you'd like your passport delivered by mail. Otherwise allow one to do business weeks until it is ready for collection at the designated office.
