How to Obtain a Japanese Passport

A Japanese citizen looking to travel internationally will need to obtain an official passport. It is a legal document that will serve as a form of national identification overseas and also permit the owner re-entry into his home country. As of 2006, all Japanese passports contain a biometric identity chip to meet the evolving demands of international travel security. Applying for a Japanese passport can be done easily within the country and abroad at any embassy or consulate of Japan.

Get a passport photo taken at the consulate office. You may also provide the photos yourself as long as they are in color, taken against a light background, and measure 35x45 mm in size. One copy is required for applicants within Japan and two for those outside of the country.

Present your driver's license, health insurance certificate, or employee or student identification card as personal photo identification. Your Japanese personal stamp (hanko) is also a valid form of I.D.

    • 5

Submit your passport materials to the consulate and pay any applicable fees, which are typically nonrefundable and paid in your local currency. You should receive a postcard within one week notifying you that your passport is ready for collection.
