How to Get a German Passport

In order to travel internationally, German citizens must first obtain a government-issued passport. This legal document serves as a proof of citizenship abroad that grants German nationals entry into foreign countries, as well as legal re-entry into their own country. A passport can be obtained at any German mission overseas that offers consular services.

Complete a passport application form at the consulate or download it ahead of time from the Germany.info website. Printing one ahead of time will save you time during the application process.

Present a certified copy of your birth certificate with exact information on the place of birth. If applicable, also present a marriage certificate, divorce certificate or the death certificate of your spouse if you are widowed.

Provide two identical, biometrically compatible, recent passport photos. They must be in color, 3.5x4.5 cm in size, and taken against a white background. The photos should show a frontal view of the face without any eyeglasses, hats or headwear, with the exception of religious attire worn on a daily basis.

Submit your passport materials and pay the fee of 50.50 euros for applicants under the age of 24, and 72 euros for applicants 24 years old and older. Payments are only accepted in cash or by money order. The German passport for applicants under 24 will be valid for six years, and 10 years for those 24 or more years of age.
