How to Edit Passports

Changing you name or editing a typo on your passport is a relatively easy process but, as with any government-related document, you need to follow every step correctly and have some patience. If dealing with a printing error on your passport you won't be charged, but if you are requesting a name change more than one year after your passport was issued a mandatory fee applies. In addition, you must show evidence proving the change you want to make is valid.

Instructions

  1. Typos and Name Changes Within a Year of Issuance

    • 1

Go to the Bureau of Consular Affairs "Change or Correct Passport" webpage and click on the DS-5504 form link, which is for correcting typos on your passport and making name changes less than one year after the passport was issued. You can find the webpage in the Resources section.

    • 2

Read the instructions given by Consular Affairs, which tell you the identification and documentation you will need to update your passport. For both typos and name changes, you will need a current passport, a new passport photo and evidence to support the requested name or information change.

    • 3

Mail the completed, signed and dated DS-5504 form along with your valid passport, passport photo and documentation proving the change that must be made to your passport. If changing your name, you must send an original or certified copy of you marriage certificate or a government document proving your legal name change under federal law. If changing a typo you need government documentation showing the correction you want changed on your passport -- such as the correct spelling of your name or your correct date of birth.

Name Changes More Than a Year After Issue

    • 4

Go to the Bureau of Consular Affairs "Change or Correct Passport" webpage and click on the DS-82 form link. This is the form to fill out if you want to change your name on your passport but have had it for more than a year. You can find the webpage in the Resources section.

    • 5

Read the Consular Affairs instructions and make sure you have a valid passport, a passport photo and documentation proving your legal name change.

    • 6

Mail a signed and dated DS-82 form along with your passport, passport photo and legal proof of name change to the address on the form. In addition, you will need to enclose the $30 name-change fee.
