Does the North American Union Exist? No.
There is no North American Union.
The concept has been proposed by academics, think tanks, and conspiracy theorists—envisioning a EU-style political/economic union of Canada, USA, and Mexico—but no treaty, institution, or government has created it.
What Does Exist
- USMCA (2020) – Trade agreement (replaced NAFTA). Economic integration, not political union.
- NAFTA (1994–2020) – Predecessor trade bloc.
- Security cooperation: NORAD (US-CAN), bilateral agreements (US-MEX, CAN-MEX).
- Regulatory alignment: Sectoral (auto, food, pharma) via trade deals.
Why It Hasn't Happened
- Massive sovereignty concerns in all three countries.
- Economic asymmetry (US GDP ~$27T vs. CAN ~$2T vs. MEX ~$1.5T).
- Political cultures differ profoundly (parliamentary vs. presidential, federalism models).
- Public opposition – strong in all three electorates.
It remains a theoretical construct, not a reality.
