Georgia's Terrain: Mountains, Hills & Coastal Plain

Georgia (U.S. state) is not predominantly flat. Its geography varies sharply across three physiographic provinces:

  1. Blue Ridge Mountains (NE) – Southern Appalachians; highest point Brasstown Bald (4,784 ft). Rugged, forested.
  2. Piedmont Plateau (Central) – Rolling hills, red clay soils; Atlanta metro sits here. Elevation 500–1,500 ft.
  3. Coastal Plain (South & Coast) – Flat to gently rolling; includes Atlantic Coastal Plain (salt marshes, barrier islands) and East Gulf Coastal Plain (SW GA). This is the only extensive flat region.

Cumberland Plateau (NW corner) adds sandstone mesas and canyons (Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon).

So: North = mountainous; Central = hilly; South/Coast = flat.
