Vinson Massif, Antarctica's highest peak, was first sighted on November 23, 1935 by American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth during a trans-Antarctic flight over the Sentinel Range. The mountain was later named after Carl Vinson, a U.S. Congressman who supported Antarctic exploration. The first successful ascent wasn't achieved until 1966.
