Resources Massachusetts Gained from Maine
While Maine was part of Massachusetts (1652–1820), the Bay State benefited from:
- Timber: Vast white pine forests—masts for Royal Navy, lumber for shipbuilding and export.
- Fisheries: Cod, haddock, herring, lobster—fueling a massive maritime economy.
- Agriculture: Potatoes, hay, apples, blueberries from fertile river valleys (Aroostook, Kennebec).
- Ports: Portland, Bath, Wiscasset—shipbuilding hubs launching clippers and schooners.
- Minerals: Granite, limestone, slate, peat.
These resources underwrote Massachusetts' early industrialization and maritime dominance. Maine's statehood (1820, Missouri Compromise) ended the union.
