How do judges in North Carolina get there jobs?

There are two primary ways that judges in North Carolina get their jobs:

1) Appointment: The Governor of North Carolina has the power to appoint judges to the state's various courts, including the North Carolina Supreme Court, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and the North Carolina Superior Courts. When a vacancy occurs on one of these courts, the Governor will typically select a qualified candidate from a pool of nominees submitted by the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission. The North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission is a bipartisan panel that is responsible for evaluating the qualifications of potential judicial candidates and recommending them to the Governor.

2) Election: In addition to being appointed by the Governor, judges in North Carolina can also be elected by popular vote. This is the case for judges of the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Superior Courts. These judges are elected to serve four-year terms, and they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.
