Age of Toronto

The City of Toronto was incorporated as a municipality on March 6, 1834, making it 190 years old (as of 2024).

Its roots go back further:

• 1750: French trading post Fort Rouillé established.
• 1759: British capture and rename to Fort York.
• 1793: Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe founds the town of York as capital of Upper Canada.
• 1834: Incorporation and renaming to Toronto (from the Mohawk tkaronto, "where there are trees standing in the water").

So while the city's European settlement history spans ~275 years, the legal entity "Toronto" dates from 1834.
