How to Drive Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park in Montana is one of the most expansive and mountainous parks in the United States. It offers a drive across some of the most scenic areas in the park. Going to the Sun Road takes travelers up and over the mountains. For travelers on Highway 2, it is a great place to get off the highway and take in some natural wonders.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the park office at (406) 888-7800 to inquire about road conditions. The famous Going to the Sun Road closes in winter due to snow. It typically opens before July 1st and doesn't close again until October, but weather is unpredictable.

    • 2

Exit Highway 2 at West Glacier if you are traveling east. The highway goes directly past this park entrance. Travelers going west need to exit onto Highway 89 north. This road takes you to the entrance in St. Mary, Montana.

    • 3

Continue along the road you came in on and follow signs for Going to the Sun Road. It is the main thoroughfare in Glacier National Park. Some roads split off of it into different areas of the park. The road is approximately 50 miles long.

    • 4

Drink a lot of water while in the park because you gain altitude along the way. Water makes it easier to adjust to the height as you cross the continental divide. Logan's Pass is the highest point on the road at 6,646 feet.

    • 5

Choose a driver who is comfortable with the rising altitude. The road is safe and speed limits are low. However, drivers with a fear of heights have a hard time with this one. If no one in your party is comfortable driving, stop at a visitors center and take the park shuttle.

    • 6

Exit the park. Westbound travelers find their way back to Highway 2. Eastbound travelers need to take Highway 89 south back to Highway 2. If you want to take in more of the sights, head to the other side of the border and visit Canada's portion of Glacier National Park.
