Laid basis for french claims in North America?

Jacques Cartier is credited with establishing the basis for French claims in North America. In 1534, he explored the St. Lawrence River and claimed the land for France. He returned in 1535 and built a fort at Stadacona (present-day Quebec City). Although the fort was abandoned the following year, Cartier's voyages laid the foundation for French exploration and colonization of North America.
