Beaufort, South Carolina Tourism

Located on a bay along the Intracoastal Waterway, Beaufort, South Carolina, is a destination that offers a little bit of everything for visitors. The town has many attractions from historical sites to pristine beaches and art museums.

    • Beaufort, the second oldest city in South Carolina, turns 300 in 2011, but the history of the town and region dates back over 500 years. There are nearly 40 historical attractions or markers in Beaufort and Beaufort County for visitors to visit.

    Museums and The Arts

    • There are several history and art museums that will appeal to a variety of visitors. Travelers can visit the first freed slave school in South Carolina which has been turned into the York Bailey Museum and Penn Center or the The John Mark Verdier House Museum which is a home built in 1805 that the Union Army took over as their headquarters during the Civil War.

    Beaches and Outdoor Recreation

    • In 2008, Tripadvisor named Beaufort home to "one of the top ten beaches in America." The natural, white and sandy beaches of Beaufort County make the area a prime location for beach retreats. Visitors can also participate in activities such as fishing, crabbing, and shrimping on their trip to Beaufort.
