Beaufort, South Carolina, is a historic coastal town renowned for its southern charm, marshes and waterways. Consider spending a sunny afternoon crabbing in Beaufort for some Carolina blue crabs using an old-fashioned technique that is certain to create special memories. Gather your supplies at local hardware and grocery stores, and head to your favorite Lowcountry waterway or marshland. Your crabbing success may just lead to a fresh, delicious dinner.
Select the location where you want to go crabbing. Go to Johnson Creek or the fishing pier at Hunting Island State Park, Station Creek, or any sea wall, sea shore or dock. You can also crab from your boat. Look for crabs close to shore in murky water and farther out in clear water.
Use the knife to cut a piece of fishing line approximately 10 to 12 feet long.
Tie a sinker weight to one end of the fishing line. Tie on a chicken neck to use as the bait near the sinker weight. Fill your bucket with ice and water.
Tie the other end of the fishing line to a stick that will serve as your handle. Lower the chicken neck into the water and wait.
Pull the line up slowly when you feel the crab eating your bait. Lower the crab into the net and then place it into your bucket.
Use tongs to take the crabs out of the bucket when you are ready to prepare them for cooking.
