Greenville is in South Carolina's Upcountry. "Lying halfway between Charlotte and Atlanta, Greenville is an inviting upstate city with tree-lined streets in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. ... It makes a good hub for exploring the Upstate," according to Frommer's Guide to Greenville, SC.
Take a walk across the Liberty Bridge at Falls Park. The 355-foot-long curved suspension bridge traverses the Reedy River Falls.
Major revitalization efforts starting in the 1970s helped turn around Greenville's once vacant downtown and attract businesses shops, restaurants and galleries. Copies of a downtown guide and map are available on the city website (see the Resources link).
Enjoy traditional Southern cooking or an outdoor brunch at some of the city's hundreds of restaurants. Start the day at Coffee Underground, a locally owned coffee shop. Try dinner at High Cotton, a Lowcountry restaurant with views of the Reedy River. It's "known for their buttermilk fried oysters with Green Goddess dressing," according to Southern Living.
The Greenville County Musuem of Art boasts a collection of 35 paintings by 20th century American artist Andrew Wyeth.
The Peace Center has a 2,100-seat concert hall that draws performers such as Itzhak Perlman and Morrissey. Artisphere, an annual spring arts festival, attracted 100,000 visitors to downtown Greenville in 2008.
