Third-Largest US State with the Driest Desert

California is the third-largest US state (after Alaska and Texas). It contains the Mojave Desert, which includes Death Valley—the hottest, driest place in North America (record 56.7°C / 134°F, average <50 mm rain/year). The Mojave's extreme aridity results from rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada and subtropical high pressure.
