Resources of the St. Lawrence Lowlands

The **St. Lawrence Lowlands**—a fertile, flat-to-gently-rolling plain stretching from the **Gulf of St. Lawrence to Lake Huron**, bordered by the **Canadian Shield (north)**, **Appalachians (south)**, and the **Great Lakes/Atlantic**—is **Canada's economic heartland**. Its resources:

1. Agriculture — "Breadbasket of Canada"

**Prime farmland** (Class 1–3 soils), **long growing season** (180+ days), **ample rainfall**. **Corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, dairy, poultry, pork, maple syrup, apples, tender fruit (Niagara), wine grapes (Ontario/Québec).** Most valuable agricultural region in Canada.

2. Forestry

**Mixedwood & hardwood forests** (sugar maple, yellow birch, beech, white pine, spruce). **Sustainable harvest** for **lumber, pulp & paper, engineered wood, furniture**. Major industry in **Ottawa Valley, Mauricie, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean**.

3. Minerals

**Metallic:** **Iron ore** (Labrador Trough — though mostly north), **copper, zinc, lead, gold** (Abitibi greenstone belt extensions).
**Industrial:** **Limestone, dolomite, sand, gravel, clay, salt (Goderich — world's largest salt mine), gypsum, peat**. Critical for construction, cement, chemicals, road salt.

4. Hydropower

**St. Lawrence River & tributaries (Ottawa, Saguenay, Saint-Maurice, Manicouagan, Outardes).** **Massive hydro complexes:** **Beauharnois, Les Cèdres, Moses-Saunders (shared with NY), Churchill Falls (Labrador), Manic-5, Outardes-4.** **Clean, baseload electricity** for Québec, Ontario, New England.

5. Water Resources

**Great Lakes–St. Lawrence System** — **20% of world's surface freshwater**. **Shipping (Seaway), drinking water (Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto via Lake Ontario), irrigation, industry, recreation.**

6. Transportation Corridor

**St. Lawrence Seaway** (deep-draft shipping to Great Lakes). **CN/CP Rail mainlines. Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 401/20). Pipelines.** **North America's busiest trade artery.**

7. Urbanization & Human Capital

**>50% of Canadians** live here: **Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa-Gatineau, Quebec City, Hamilton, London, Kitchener-Waterloo.** **Universities, hospitals, R&D, finance, tech, advanced manufacturing, culture.** The ultimate resource: **people**.

This region's **resource density, connectivity, and human concentration** make it the **core of Canadian Confederation**.
