Africa: Home to the World's Longest River & Largest Hot Desert
Africa claims both superlatives:
- Longest River: Nile – 6,650 km (4,132 mi) from Lake Victoria (Uganda) to Mediterranean. Drains 11 countries.
- Largest Hot Desert: Sahara – 9.2M km² (3.6M sq mi). Covers 11 countries; expands ~10 km/yr southward (desertification).
Why Africa?
Tectonics + Climate: The African Plate's stability allowed the Nile's ancient course to persist. Meanwhile, the subtropical high-pressure belt (Hadley Cell descent) parks over North Africa, creating permanent aridity. The Nile crosses the Sahara—life thread through death zone.
Contrast
- Antarctica has the largest desert overall (cold desert, 14M km²).
- Amazon rivals Nile length (6,400–6,992 km debated).
But for hot desert + longest river on one continent—Africa stands alone.
