Things to Do in the Ohio Valley

The Ohio Valley covers areas of Ohio and West Virginia that include counties such as Brooke, Ohio, Coshocton and Tuscarawas. The tourist attractions in the Ohio Valley are as varied as the counties and cities they lie within - from novelty museums and seasonal festivals to casinos and music venues.
  1. Oil and Gas Museum

    • Located in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the Oil and Gas Museum presents historical displays and artifacts detailing the history of the oil and gas industry in West Virginia and Ohio. Exhibits are located both inside and outside of the museum building and include a B&O Railroad display, a World War I display, a historical and genealogical library, a Spencer Machine pumpjack, and a Parkersburg pump. Both restored and non-restored items, such as steam engines, gas engines and compressors, are also available for viewing by museum guests. The Oil and Gas museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

    Marx Toy Museum

    • Created to present the history of the Louis Marx & Company toys, the Marx Toy Museum is located in Glen Dale, West Virginia. Exibits include a 1950s-style snack area with a jukebox and original Coke machines, playsets from the '50s and '60s such as the Alamo and the Sunnyside Service Station, prototype models, battery-operated cars, ride-on trains, and the Marx Big Wheel. Three videos play on a regular schedule for visitors to watch, including a 30-minute compilation of Marx commercials as well as a history of Marx Toys and Louis Marx. The Marx Toy Museum is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., from April through December.

    Victoria Theater

    • Home of the Victoria Jamboree, a monthly musical concert that takes place on the first Friday of the month, the Victoria Theater in Wheeling was established in 1904 and is the oldest theater in West Virginia. Elvis impersonators, local entertainers, and musicians who play '40s- and '50s-style country, bluegrass, gospel, and rock and roll play here, and every show ends with an Elvis finale. Legal gambling is also offered on-site at the theater for guests over the age of 21.
