Middle Passage Ceremonies Project: Located in Miami, Not Jacksonville

The Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project (MPCPMP) is headquartered in Miami, Florida—not Jacksonville. The correct address: 1111 NW 5th Avenue, Suite 101, Miami, FL 33136.

Mission and Work

Founded in 2011, MPCPMP commemorates the 2+ million Africans who perished during the Middle Passage and the 12+ million who survived forced transatlantic transport. Activities include:

  • Ancestral remembrance ceremonies at documented Middle Passage ports (50+ U.S. sites identified)
  • Historical marker installations with community partners
  • Educational programming and digital archive development
  • Collaboration with UNESCO's Slave Route Project

Why Miami?

Miami's history as a major slave trade port (despite Spanish Florida's earlier free-black communities) and its contemporary Afro-Caribbean demographics make it a symbolically resonant base. The organization operates nationally with volunteers and partner institutions across coastal states.
