Instructions

  1. Take a Trip on Polish Railways (PKP)

    • 1

Make reservations on Polish Railways by calling Rail Europe at (877) 257-2887, or visit their Web site to book your travel arrangements (see Resources below).

    • 2

Understand the restrictions. PKP is divided into several companies that provide different levels of rail service throughout the country. Tickets are valid only on the trains operated by the issuing company.

    • 3

Take the Pospieszny, or long-distance express trains, with limited stops along the route to see more of the country. The most popular routes are Warsaw to Kraków and Warsaw to Zakopane, so make reservations in advance on these lines.

    • 4

Connect to a regional train from an InterCity line and expect to pay for two tickets. Tickets can be bought online, and reservations are generally required.

    • 5

Book your trip in advance during peak holiday seasons, such as the end of December and New Year's, as reserved seats are required. Trains along popular routes book up fast.

    • 6

Purchase your ticket from a conductor if you didn't book in advance, but expect to pay an additional fee. You can also purchase your reservation, where required, from the conductor.

    • 7

Choose an Express or InterCity route for the safest rail travel in Poland. Your trip will be faster and more comfortable on these relatively modern trains.

    • 8

Buy rail passes that will let you ride on Polish railways as well as other Eastern European countries.

    • 9

Buy tickets for trips on Polish railways from a travel agent or at a station. You don't have to make a reservation if you're taking one of the slower, cheaper trains (osobowy trains).

    Know Your Destination

    • 10

Arrive in Frederic Chopin International Airport in Warsaw by plane to begin your journey through Poland.

    • 11

Poland has much to offer in the way of natural tourist attractions. Visit the lake districts or the seaside. If you enjoy hiking, think about taking a side trip to one of Poland's many mountain ranges or visiting one of several national parks.

    • 12

Enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Poland's larger cities, including Warsaw, Krakow and Gdansk. Each possesses remnants of a medieval and renaissance past, impressive architecture and ancient monuments.
