Since 1975, nonprofit Exploritas (formerly Elderhostel) has been encouraging the older-than-50 crowd to explore new places, cultures and activities with an in-depth educational component and a focus on life-long learning. Choose a travel program based on interests, price and activity level, with 8,000 educational tours in all 50 states and more than 90 countries. Exploritas offers intergenerational programs for grandparents and grandchildren, service learning where participants can tutor schoolchildren, volunteer in wildlife habitats, take part in artifact and museum work. Women-only programs are scheduled around the world. Scholarships also are available for those taking part in the Exploritas community. Programs costs vary widely, depending upon the destination, duration and travel program selected.
