The Best Cities for Senior Singles

About 46 percent of Americans over the age of 65 are single, according to U.S. News and World Report. However, since women typically outlive men, many single seniors are female. Choosing where to retire mostly depends on your personal preference, but some places in the United States are better for senior singles than others.

  1. Southwest

    • The Southwest offers a variety of attractive cities for senior citizens. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is known for drawing people with artistic interests, and you can take art classes with other like-minded seniors. According to AARP The Magazine, Santa Fe is one of the best places in America to reinvent your life. La Cruces, New Mexico, is a "Dream Town" for seniors, according to the same source. It offers a mild climate near the Organ Mountains and a reasonable cost of living. Another good choice in the Southwest is Prescott, Arizona. Sunny most days, Prescott is located at 5,400 feet, allowing it four distinct seasons. The town offers plenty to do as well with outdoor concerts, art shows and more than 600 miles of hiking trails nearby.

    New England

    • If you love the snow, New England offers towns that are attractive to senior citizens. Hanover is a charming village in New Hampshire that not only offers a small town but access to Dartmouth College's senior education center. If you love skiing, Hanover is located near five hills. Across the Connecticut River in Vermont, state capital Montpelier is good for seniors who want to "live the simple life," according to AARP magazine. If you are a senior who prefers a quiet community with a "small town" vibe, consider Montpelier. For the liberal senior, Northampton, Massachusetts, home to Smith College, also offers a small town feel with access to the Berkshire Mountains.

    Florida

    • Florida can be the ideal place for single senior citizens to retire. Days are warm and sunny and you don't need to shovel snow in the winter. Cities such as Fort Lauderdale and Miami have high percentages of single senior citizens, giving you a chance to kindle a romance while enjoying the state's sub-tropical weather. Walk along the beach or go to a show. For the adventurous senior, snorkel or scuba dive in the coral reef just off the coastline.

    California

    • Many single senior citizens also retire to California. If you are a wine enthusiast, check out Santa Rosa. Located near San Francisco, you can visit more than 200 wineries, see the mighty redwoods, and enjoy the region's mild weather. If you want good weather year round, consider San Diego. Home to more than 15 museums and a popular zoo, San Diego is a large city with a laid-back feel. It is also close to the beach and only a few hours away from Los Angeles.
