The Best Small Cities for African Americans

When choosing a city to live in there are many factors to consider, such as the housing, job market, school system and overall quality of life. Many smaller cities offer attractive opportunities for African Americans to work, go to school and raise families. Whether you are single or have a family, one of these cities might be the perfect place to call home.

  1. Atlanta, GA

    • Often called the "New York of the South," Atlanta has seen an increase in the number of African Americans migrating there from other parts of the country. With its mix of city life and southern charm, Atlanta is a hot spot for African-American singles and families. Atlanta has also seen a rise in black-owned businesses and, most recently, an increase in jobs in the entertainment industry with the opening of Tyler Perry Studios.

    Washington, D.C.

    • Nicknamed "Chocolate City," Washington, D.C., has a thriving African-American community. African Americans constitute around 60 percent of the city's population and are among the highest earners on Black Enterprise's list. D.C. is home to historically black Howard University and of course the nation's capitol.

    Charlotte, N.C.

    • Charlotte, North Carolina, is considered to be one of the most hospitable places for African Americans, according to blackenterprise.com. The city is headquarters to Bank of America and Wachovia, two companies that are featured on Black Enterprise's list of 40 Best Companies for Diversity. The city is also home to a number of four-year universities including the University of North Carolina.
