How to Surf the West Coast of Florida

Florida's west coast has warm, shallow water; this makes finding the perfect surfing spot a challenge. Most surf fans head to the east coast for the big waves, but that doesn't mean the west coast is lacking in spots that can offer a morning's fun. Finding the breaks and best waves on Florida's west coast takes a little more research than it does on the Atlantic side, but the waves are there.

Things You'll Need

  • Surfboard
  • Board leash
  • Wetsuit (optional)
  • Surf shop

Instructions

  1. Catch West Florida Waves

    • 1

Prepare your board in the same manner you would for any other day of surfing, including waxing it.

    • 2

Load your board on your car and head down to the beach. Drive along the beach until you see a surf shop.

    • 3

Ask the workers at the shop for the best place to surf. Be honest about your experience and ability. Many of the waves on the west coast aren't as high as on the east coast. Locals can help you find the best spot if they know your desires and capabilities.

    • 4

Try looking at a terrain map of the coastline or a chart of water depth if you can't find a surf shop. Long sandbars off the coast will produce waves.

    • 5

Once you've found a spot, get your board and your leash and paddle out. Catch the wave and surf as you would anywhere else in the world.
