How to Visit the Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is lined with breathtaking cliffs and beaches that look out onto the Pacific Ocean. Watch the Depoe Bay Whales, try some locally caught crab and enjoy a fiery sun set. The area is easy to get to by car, train or even bicycle. Summer is the most popular time to visit the Oregon Coast, but the weather is mild (if a little rainy) even during the winter.

Instructions

Drive route 101, which runs along the coast and offers places to stop and enjoy the views. The Coastal bike path is also on route 101, but be careful because the road is windy and the shoulder is narrow. Amtrak also offers train service along the Oregon Coast (see Resources below).

Observe whales in their natural habitat at the Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay on route 101. Gray whales pass the Oregon Coast when they migrate between Alaska and Mexico. The best time to see whales is between January and mid-November (see Resources below).

Stay where you can see and hear the ocean from your bed. Many campsites, RV parks, motels and hotels are located right on the coast. During the off-season (November to March) you can find a motel room with a porch and kitchen for as little as $65. This is the perfect place to relax and watch the sun set over the ocean (see Resources below).

Take photographs of one of Oregon's lighthouses. Best known are the Cape Meares Lighthouse by Tillamook, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport, the Heceta Head Lighthouse atop a 205-foot cliff, and the Cape Blanco Lighthouse built in 1870.
