How to Visit the Mayan Ruins

Near Cancun, Mexico along the Yucatan Peninsula ancient Mayan ruins still stand today and are a major tourist attraction. The Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum ruins are the three most visited. You can chose from a guided tour or visiting the Mayan ruins on your own.

      Book a trip to Cancun. This is the closest resort area near the Mayan ruins. Ask the concierge at your hotel about the best way to get to the Mayan ruins. Some hotels offer free shuttle buses to the ruins.

      Visit the Mexican tourism website (see Resources) to research the ruins and decide which one you would like to visit. This will familiarize you with the area and help you devise an itinerary.

      Ask your travel agent about booking a tour to the ruins in advance or go online and search for companies that offer guided tours to the site.

      Rent a car if you decide to drive yourself to the ruins. You can rent a car at several locations in and around Cancun. The Mayan ruins are about 100 miles or an hour and a half drive away from the city.

      Visit the Mayan capital of Chichen Itza first. It's the centerpiece of the ruins and the most tourist-friendly destination. Maps and information about the ruins will be available here as well as souvenirs.
