The History of the Temple of Poseidon

Poseidon was the Greek god of the sea, so his temple was fittingly built on the water's edge on the island of Poros.
  1. Time Frame

    • There is no way to be sure of the year the temple was built; however, experts believe it was built sometime between 440 to 520 BC.

    Architecture

    • The temple is Doric in style, although some columns are Ionian. There are six columns on the short side and 12 on the long.

    Purpose

    • The original purpose of the temple was to deal with civic and religious matters for the city states of Aigina, Hermione, Prassies, Athens, Epidauros and Orhomenos.

    Statues

    • Historians believe that there were once statues throughout the temple, but they have vanished over time, potentially stolen.

    Condition

    • Unfortunately, all that remains of the temple today are ruins.

    Fun Fact

    • The English poet Lord Byron visited the temple and carved his name into one of the columns during the 19th century.
