How to Travel on Any Budget in Oman

Oman is a country on the eastern shore of the Saudi Arabian peninsula in the Middle East. In the last three decades, the country has become much more developed and modern, with paved roads and luxury hotels that cater to the very rich. Muscat is the main tourist city in Oman, but there are also plenty of other cities to visit, primarily along the eastern coast. Here is some information on where to stay and how to get around.

  1. Where to Stay

    • 1

Find five-star luxury accommodations in Muscat and other coastal resort areas. Prices range from $350 a night to more than $1200 a night. Suites can be several thousands of dollars a night.

    • 2

Opt for moderate accommodations that can be cheap by comparison. In Salalah, you will find three-star hotels for $125 to $300 a night.

    • 3

Rough it in a desert hut constructed by Bedouin locals. These can be quite cheap, at only a few dollars a night. Safety can be a bit of an issue, though, as these accommodations have no real security.

    • 4

Know that you have tons of accommodation options in Oman along most of the coast. Prices vary greatly, ranging anywhere from $65 a night to tens of thousands of dollars for presidential suites overlooking the Arabian Sea.

    • 5

To book accommodations, contact Oman Ministry of Tourism at 011 (+968) 24588700 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below). (If calling outside the United States or Canada, call 00 (+968) 24588700.)

    Getting Around

    • 6

Arrive by air in Muscat, the capital. Some international flights also land in Salalah.

    • 7

Take a car ride from the United Arab Emirates. Crossing this border to the northwest is pretty easy and the road conditions are good.

    • 8

Rent a car. Traffic in Muscat can be quite congested, but cars can be convenient for off-road travel in the area.

    • 9

Be sure your car is insured in Oman before crossing borders or you could get hung up at border posts.

    • 10

Ride a local bus around major cities like Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, Sur and Nizwa. There are also buses that travel among these cities.
