How to Travel to Switzerland on a Food Budget

When visiting Switzerland, be prepared for high food prices. In order to make the most out of your trip, it's wise to plan your meals ahead of time, or at least what kind of meals you wish to purchase. If you choose to visit restaurants, skip the most expensive places, and visit well known smaller or less expensive locations. Also note that many vegetarian options may be just as healthy while costing less.

Research food prices. Food is more expensive in Switzerland than in America in not only restaurants but in grocery stores as well. By researching food prices in both restaurants and grocery stores in the area that you will be staying, you create an adequate food budget per day.

    • 2

Buy food in grocery stores instead of eating out. This will drastically lower your food cost and will allow you to try a larger variety of Swiss foods and beverages. All cities and towns have one of the two chain grocery stores, bakeries, and small specialty grocery stores. Food prices vary per location and per type of grocery store that you visit.

    • 3

Book a vacation rental. Most Swiss vacation rentals include a kitchen area which will allow you to cook in as opposed to eating out for every meal. Before you plan your trip, look up traditional Swiss recipes so that you can still enjoy traditional cuisine without paying the hefty prices that you will likely find at restaurants.

Plan to camp out for at least part of your trip. Not only will this save you money on lodging but most campsites have areas to grill or cook outdoors. Take advantage of the opportunity to camp out as you will also be able to enjoy the beautiful Swiss countryside and forests.

    • 5

Purchase an all inclusive package. Most lodges offer travel packages that include most meals. By purchasing meals and lodging together, you are receiving a large discount on meals compared to what you would spend if you purchased each meal individually.

Purchase food from farms. Many farmers sell food such as produce and cheese in bulk or for lower prices than are found in grocery stores. Visit smaller, rural farms but only if they have signs offering products for sale. Many farmers also produce and sell types of liquor such as schnapps.
