How to Travel in Switzerland

Switzerland is a small, mountainous country. The easiest way to travel around Switzerland is to buy a Eurail pass and travel by train. The Swiss train system is clean, almost always on time and the least expensive way to travel. The trains are programmed, so that you typically wait no more than 15 minutes to catch your connecting train. Switzerland has some of the most scenic landscapes in the world, and riding a train lets you see the Alps and the valleys.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which Eurail pass is best for you. If you are only traveling in Switzerland, you can buy a one-country pass. If you are traveling in more than one country in Europe, you can buy a select pass, regional pass or global pass. (See "Eurail Passes" under "References.")

    • 2

Purchase a Eurail pass through the Eurail website or through a travel agent. The Eurail website offers the lowest available prices on their passes. The pass will be delivered to you by mail after you purchase it. Make sure you order well in advance of your departure.

    • 3

Plan a route through Switzerland. Decide which cities you want to visit, then plug the departure and arrival cities into the train timetable by clicking on the link "Train Timetables" under "Resources." You can access this route planner/timetable from the Internet while you are traveling. The timetable will show you when a train arrives at your departure station and what connecting trains, where you need to depart the current train to catch a connecting train, and when you will arrive at your destination.

    • 4

Decide whether or not you want to make reservations. Trains in Switzerland do not require reservations, but you can reserve a seat if you are travelling during a peak travel time and want to be guaranteed a seat. Reservations can be made at all train stations in Switzerland and throughout Europe.

    • 5

Validate your pass at a ticket window at the train station where you ride your first train. Your pass must be validated before getting on the train. You can get your pass validated at any train station in Switzerland and throughout Europe.

    • 6

Show your pass to a train conductor once your board the plane. A conductor will come through the aisle to stamp your pass. If you purchased a five-day Eurail pass, your pass will be stamped on your first train ride at the beginning of each day. You can ride the trains anywhere in Switzerland -- or Europe, if you have a multi-country pass -- as many times as you want that day.
