What other buildings were on the acropolis?

The Acropolis of Athens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, held various significant buildings besides the iconic Parthenon. The Erechtheion was another temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. Known for its Porch of the Maidens, it featured six sculpted female figures known as Caryatids supporting its roof.

Next to the Erechtheion was the Old Temple of Athena, where the iconic statue of Athena, made by the Greek sculptor Phidias, was once housed. The temple also served as the state treasury.

The Propylaea, a monumental gateway, was the grand entrance to the Acropolis. It comprised Doric columns and had wings on each side, serving as a ceremonial entrance for processions.

The Temple of Athena Nike, dedicated to the goddess of victory, was situated at the entrance to the Acropolis near the Propylaea. It celebrated military triumphs and represented Athens' victories.

Lastly, the Acropolis also included the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia, a sacred precinct dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was considered a place of worship and asylum and had various structures and altars.
