The New 7 Wonders of the World (2007)

On **July 7, 2007** (07.07.07), the New7Wonders Foundation announced the results of a global poll (100M+ votes):

1. Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – 30 m Art Deco statue (1931).
2. Great Wall of China (Northern China) – 21,000 km of fortifications (7th c. BCE–16th c. CE).
3. Chichén Itzá (Yucatán, Mexico) – Maya city, El Castillo pyramid (~600 CE).
4. Colosseum (Rome, Italy) – Flavian amphitheatre, 50,000 capacity (80 CE).
5. Machu Picchu (Cusco, Peru) – Inca citadel, 2,430 m elevation (~1450 CE).
6. Petra (Ma'an, Jordan) – Nabataean rock-cut city (1st c. CE).
7. Taj Mahal (Agra, India) – Mughal marble mausoleum (1648).

Selection Process

• 200 existing monuments → 21 finalists → global vote (phone, internet, SMS).
• UNESCO not involved; criticised as unscientific but huge public engagement.

Honorary Candidate

**Giza Pyramids** (only surviving Ancient Wonder) granted honorary status—excluded from voting.

These seven represent human creativity across continents and millennia.
