Tips for Traveling on Amtrak

Although it is an often forgotten mode of transportation in the United States, the Amtrak train system can be the perfect way to travel between two cities that have Amtrak stations. If you have never traveled on Amtrak before, there are some things you should take into consideration.
  1. Arrive Early

    • Showing up early at the train station is a must. This is even more important if you have never been to the station because you will need to find your way around. Stations in larger cities such as Chicago and New York can be large and spread out and it will take some time to find the right track. The good thing about train travel is there is no need to take off your shoes and go through a long security line.

    Sit Where You Want

    • When you purchase your Amtrak ticket you are essentially reserving your seat. However, most trains do not actually have reserved seating, so you can sit where you want. Most seats are the same, although you are generally required to stay in the same location for the duration of the trip. This is because the train attendants will punch your ticket and place it above your seat. This will show to them that you have a ticket and you will no longer need to show it after every stop. However, you are allowed to walk through the train to different cabins. Just leave your hanging ticket above your seat and return to your seat when done.

    Bring Your Own Food

    • Even though most trains will have a food car on-board, you will probably want to bring your own food and drinks. This is because train food is generally expensive and consists of sandwiches that are microwaved for you. Save your money and bring your own snacks. You will be much happier with the food selection. You also can pick up some food from one of the restaurants inside the train station and bring it with you.
