Amtrak Traveling Options

Trains are one of the oldest forms of transportation, yet still today they remain a popular way for people to get from one place to the next. Amtrak offers a variety of ways for travelers to customize their trip, including tickets that allow travelers to check out the entire country, to tickets that make a quick stop in a single city. Travelers can choose from on-board options as well.
  1. General Tickets

    • The most common way to travel on Amtrak is to purchase either a one-way ticket or a round-trip ticket. One-way tickets let riders travel to a single destination; whereas, round-trip tickets enable travelers to go to a single destination and then back again. General tickets for long trips also give travelers the option of purchasing sleeping accommodations by reservation only. Some rooms include bathroom options and can accommodate up to four people. Dining options include a snack bar in the lounge car or full-service dining with waitresses and menus in the dining car.

    Multi-Ride Tickets

    • Multi-ride tickets are for people who travel short-distance routes often such as workers or students who live outside a city. These tickets offer travelers passes that let them travel the same route multiple times. For instance, some multi-ride tickets allow customers to ride to and from a designated city an unlimited amount times per month. Other multi-ride passes give users 10 rides to use within 180 days. Multi-ride tickets are not available for long trips.

    USA Rail Passes

    • USA rail passes are available for people who wish to travel throughout the United States to a variety of destinations. Choose from 15-day, 30-day or 45-day passes that you must use within a 180-day time period. The passes allow users to take advantage of any Amtrak destination around the country, barring certain restrictions. You must book USA rail passes in advance, and they cannot be purchased when boarding a train as you can some general Amtrak tickets.

    Multi-City Tickets

    • Multi-city tickets for Amtrak allow users to book tickets for multiple destinations, which is a solid option for people looking to vacation to several locations. For example, travelers can customize a route that allows them to stop in multiple cities before they arrive at their main destination as long as it coincides with Amtrak schedules. Amtrak also offers vacation deals such as the National Park trip that gives riders the option to stop at up to 50 parks like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and the Everglades.
