Amtrak Ski Vacations

For those that enjoy skiing during the wintertime, ski packages may be the most economical way to travel to and ski at your favorite resort. Amtrak offers several ski packages to resorts in Montana and Colorado. Some packages will require travelers to book a rental car to take them to their final destination. Standard packages include accommodations, lift tickets, train transfers, rental cars and coach fare.
  1. Whitefish, Montana

    • Amtrak's ski tour to Northwest Montana takes visitors to the Whitefish Mountain Resort. The resort is geared towards skiers of all levels. Travelers will be riding upon the Empire Builder, which runs from Chicago, Illinois, and takes travelers directly to the ski resort. Travelers may upgrade to sleeper cars for an additional fee. The resort features 3,000 acres for skiing, treed areas and deep snow. Reservations for this package are booked through third-party travel agencies, and travelers may customize the package based on their needs. The Empire Builder train's standard route runs from Chicago to Seattle, Washington.

    Winter Park, Colorado

    • Winter Park, Colorado is located about one hour away from Denver and is one of the largest ski resorts in Colorado. Travelers will ride upon Amtrak's California Zephyr, which leaves from Emeryville, California. The train will drop travelers off near the resort at the Fraser, Colorado station. The California Zephyr's normal route runs from Emeryville to Chicago, Illinois with stops in Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver and Omaha. Resort features include over 2,700 acres for skiing, 134 ski trails and 24 ski lifts. The Winter Park gondola can take over 33,000 skiers uphill per hour.

    Other Trips

    • The remaining Amtrak trips require car rentals from either Winter Park or Denver, Colorado. Breckenridge has over 2,200 acres for skiing on 147 trails. Copper Mountain ski resort has approximately 2,400 acres for skiing and varied terrain, and it has family activities like snow tubing. Powderhorn Resort is located in Grand Junction, Colorado, and mountains top out at 4,000 feet. This area tends to be warmer than the rest of the Colorado ski resorts. Aspen/Snowmass is a more upscale area, and it features access to four different mountains. Sunlight Resort is located in Glenwood Springs, and this resort is geared towards intermediate and advanced skiers. Nearby Glenwood Springs attractions include the Hot Springs Pool and caves.
