Train Trips From New Jersey to Georgia

Amtrak offers several options to those wishing to travel more than 800 miles from New Jersey to Georgia by train. With increasing gas prices and lengthy airport security measures, train travel isn't just taking a step back in time; it also offers an economical and relaxing way to travel down the East Coast.
  1. The Crescent Line

    • Amtrak's "Crescent" route offers service between New York and New Orleans, passing through New Jersey and cutting across Georgia along the way. Riders departing from Newark or Trenton can head to Atlanta or Gainesville, Georgia. The Crescent offers this 30-hour service daily. Seating options include regular coach seats, roomettes, bedrooms and bedroom suites. Food service is available, with a dining car as well as dinette, cafe and snack cars. The Crescent passes through a number of the great cities of the Eastern Seaboard, beginning in New York City and going through Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Atlanta, and continuing through Birmingham before ending in New Orleans. As of May 2010, trains depart from Newark at 1:42 p.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 8:13 a.m. the following day. Fares for one-way coach seats begin at $242.

    The Palmetto

    • The "Palmetto" line runs from New York to Miami, passing through Newark and Trenton, New Jersey, and cutting through eastern Georgia, stopping in Savannah and Jesup. It passes through Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Fayetteville, Charleston and Savannah, and continues through Jacksonville and Orlando to terminate either in Tampa or Miami. Reserved coach seats, business class seats, roomettes, bedrooms or bedroom suites are all available. Food services include a dining car, a lounge, cafe and snack cars. Prices and routes range vary slightly. As of May 2010, a one-way trip from Newark to Savannah about the Palmetto takes 14 hours and 31 minutes and costs $146.

    The Silver Service

    • In addition to the Palmetto, the two Silver Service lines, the "Silver Meteor" and "Silver Star" travel from New York to Tampa and Miami, crossing through New Jersey and Savannah, Georgia. With very similar routes to the Palmetto, the Silver Meteor and Silver Star provide the option of continuing onward to Tampa instead of Miami. The Silver Star detours in the Carolinas, passing through Raleigh and Columbia instead of going through Charleston. As of May 2010, to travel one-way from Newark to Savannah, the Silver Meteor takes just over 15 hours and costs $190 for a reserved coach seat. Also at $190, the Silver Star takes 17 hours and 17 minutes.
