Trains from Montreal to New York City

Forget the hassle of the airport and treat yourself to a one of a kind travel adventure. Gorgeous lakeside views, mountain vistas and historic landmarks are just a few of the treasures passengers will see taking the train from Montreal to New York City. With daily departures, this unique travel experience can easily fit into a long weekend of fun in the Big Apple. The only current route that exists between these two cities is the Adirondack, operated by Amtrak.
  1. Arrival and Departure

    • The Adirondack departs daily each morning from Central Station in Montreal and arrives in the evening at Penn Station in New York City. The train stops at the border checkpoint in Rouses Point, New York, and has another short break in Albany. As both stations can be extremely busy, it's advisable to purchase your tickets in advance and print out before departure. The return trip from New York City also leaves in the morning and has you back in Montreal by the evening.

    Trip Highlights

    • The Adirondack begins its journey by winding down the western edge of Lake Champlain, at times hugging the shoreline, providing spectacular views of the lake and the Green Mountains of Vermont. By afternoon, the Adirondack enters the scenic Hudson Valley and riders are treated to the sights of West Point Academy, the medieval Bannerman Castle and the cliffs of the Palisades. Plan your trip during the autumn to witness stunning fall foliage along the route.

    Amenities

    • The Adirondack features a cafe car stocked with snacks and small meals. Passengers also have the option of purchasing beer and wine. To stay connected, seats are equipped with a 120-volt electric outlet. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the train, but due to limited bandwidth there is no streaming of movies or music. There is no checked baggage on board the Adirondack; riders may bring two bags under 50 pounds for no additional charge.

    Considerations

    • All travelers on the Adirondack will need to provide government-issued identification before being allowed to cross the border. Make sure before making a reservation that you have the proper documents to enter the country. No smoking -- including electronic cigarettes -- is allowed on any Amtrak train or station, but there are stops along the way where passengers can disembark for a break as long as they stay close to the train. Ask the conductor for more information.
