How to Send Luggage on Amtrak

Amtrak is a government-run railroad that provides service to hundreds of cities in the United States. Much like airlines, Amtrak has luggage rules and requirements designed for the comfort and safety of passengers. Amtrak offers shipping services for luggage, even if no passenger is accompanying the luggage. Size and weight limits apply; your total shipment cannot exceed 500 pounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the weight and size of your luggage to determine whether you can ship it on an Amtrak train. All bags must weigh less than 50 pounds. Luggage shipped with Amtrak cannot exceed 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. in size.

    • 2

Ship only the items that are considered permissible inside luggage on an Amtrak train. Amtrak will ship almost anything, provided it fits into your luggage, as long as it is not explosive, illegal or dangerous. Amtrak also will ship human remains.

    • 3

Place your contact information on a luggage tag on each item you ship. Your name, address and phone number should be attached to the exterior of your luggage in case it is misplaced.

    • 4

Take your luggage with you to the train station and present your photo identification to ship your luggage. This is an Amtrak policy; without photo identification, you cannot place your luggage aboard any Amtrak train. Call Amtrak at 800-377-6914 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday to Friday to obtain shipping rates, schedules and the type of items permitted and not permitted on board.
