How to Send Luggage First

As airlines charge fees for checked baggage and the overweight bag charges are even higher, you might be tempted to ship your luggage before you travel. Several companies offer luggage shipping services at a high price. If you want to save money and mail some necessary items to your destination, the postal service offers flat-rate packages. Any legal item that fits in the box can be waiting for you at the hotel. Shipping a few items for less than $14 could keep your suitcase under the 50 pound limit and save a $60 fee.

    • 2

Pack your luggage at least eight days in advance. Select your shipping company such as FedEx or UPS, or choose a professional luggage shipping company such as Luggage Forward or The Luggage Club. Call the company to make arrangements for shipping.

    • 3

Give your luggage to the driver and the company will deliver it to your destination.

Mail Items to Reduce Overweight Luggage Charges

    • 4

Contact your hotel to verify they will accept and hold a package for you. Go to your local post office and pick up a free, large flat-rate box or order one online via the Postal Service (usps.com).

    • 5

Select heavy items you intend to take that will fit into the box and fill the box. Add socks or underwear to cushion the items and fill all corners of the box.

    • 6

Take the sealed, addressed box to the post office and buy postage for shipping, or print a shipping label from the USPS website to save more money.
