Visit the official Amtrak website (see Resources) and click on the Reservations tab.
Fill out all information about where and when you are planning to travel. Click "Next." A list of schedules will appear on the screen. Select the best time for both the arrival date and return date. Some trains provide upgrade options (such as coach, business or sleeper seats), which can be selected at this time. Select the passenger type (adult/child/senior) and click "View Fare."
Approve the fare listed on the screen and enter all passenger information. Once the passenger information has been entered, payment information will be obtained. The site accepts all major credit cards. After all sections are completed and your method of payment is approved, a confirmation ticket will be emailed to you to print out and bring to the station.
To buy your tickets over the phone, dial the Amtrak toll-free number: (800) 872-7245, or (800) USA-RAIL. This will connect you to an automated system that will take you through the same process as online. If you are more comfortable talking to an agent, press zero and you will be connected to a live person. Phone orders must be paid with major credit or check cards.
To buy your tickets through your PDA or web-based cellphone, visit amtrak.com from your device. This will take you to the PDA-modified Amtrak website, which will allow you to reserve tickets.
If you normally book your travel with a travel agent, check to see if your agent is approved to sell Amtrak tickets. This may include an added fee to cover the costs of the travel agent.
To book at the station, visit either the automated kiosk or teller. The kiosks accept major credit cards. Tellers accept cash, debit cards and major credit cards.
